Surrender, half a bet back

Surrender lets you fold a hand and keep half your stake. It is the right play only when the hand would lose more than half a bet on average, which in a shoe game means a handful of stiff totals against a 9, 10 or ace. Here are those hands, and what the rule is worth.

Blackjack surrender is the only play that lets you lose on purpose, and lose less for it. You fold your first two cards and the table returns half your stake. Most hands are worth more than that, so you keep playing them. A few are not: they lose so often that half a bet back is the better deal. The whole skill is knowing which hands those are and which kind of surrender the table offers.

Late and early blackjack surrender

There are two versions, and they differ only in timing.

Late surrenderEarly surrender

Against a dealer blackjackyou have already lost the full betyou still get half back
Where you meet itthe common version on shoe tablesseldom offered
Value to you (eight decks, S17)about 0.08 pointsabout 0.31 vs ten plus 0.39 vs ace

Late surrender is the one to expect. Wizard of Odds' rule table shows its whole value comes from hands against a ten-value upcard: against an ace, once the dealer has checked, it adds nothing at an eight-deck table that stands on soft 17. Early surrender is worth far more because it lets you escape before a dealer natural takes the whole bet. Adding its two lines gives roughly 0.7 points, close to the cost of the hit-soft-17 rule three times over.

The break-even, worked out

Surrender always returns −0.5 of your bet. Playing on returns your win chance minus your loss chance. So surrender is right when:

win chance − loss chance < −0.5

With no pushes, win + loss = 1, and the condition becomes 2 × win − 1 < −0.5, so win < 25%. Pushes move the line slightly, as the table shows:

23%2%75%−0.52surrender
20%5%75%−0.55surrender

The figures here are illustrations of the formula. Real chances for each hand come from the same simulations that produce the basic strategy chart, and the hand table below is their result.

Wizard of Odds adds two refinements for four and six decks: surrender 15 against a 10 only when it is 9+6 or 10+5, not 8+7, and surrender 8,8 only against an ace at a hit-soft-17 table. At eight decks the composition never changes the answer. Everything else stays as the chart says: soft hands and totals of 14 or less are never surrendered.

Early surrender

Early surrender adds hands only against a ten and an ace, because those are the upcards that hide a natural:

  1. Against an ace: hard 5 to 7, hard 12 to 17, and pairs of 3s, 6s, 7s and 8s. Add 2,2 when the dealer hits soft 17.
  2. Against a ten: hard 14 to 16, and pairs of 7s and 8s.

Wizard of Odds lists a few single- and double-deck exceptions, such as keeping 4+10 against a ten. In the six- and eight-deck shoes most online tables use, the list above stands.

What blackjack surrender is worth in money

Price the rule like any other: hands × stake × change in edge. For 500 hands at $10, which is $5,000 staked:

Rule at the tableChange in edgeOver $5,000 staked
Late surrender, used correctlyabout −0.08 pointsabout $4 saved
Early surrender vs ten and aceabout −0.7 pointsabout $35 saved
Dealer hits soft 17about +0.22 pointsabout $11 lost
Blackjack pays 6:5about +1.4 pointsabout $70 lost

Late surrender is a small extra, not a reason to choose a table. It saves less than a third of what the soft 17 rule costs, and nothing next to a short blackjack payout. Read the payout and the soft 17 line first; our house edge page prices both.

Blackjack surrender mistakes

  • Folding too much. Hard 12 to 14 against a ten are not on the late-surrender list at shoe tables. Folding them swaps a smaller average loss for a certain half-bet loss.
  • Folding 8,8 against a ten. At late-surrender shoe tables the pair is split, not surrendered.
  • Playing an early-surrender list at a late-surrender table. Against an ace, late surrender comes after the dealer has already shown no natural; most early-surrender folds are wrong then.
  • Not surrendering 16 against a 10. It feels like giving up a live hand. It is the clearest surrender in the chart.
  • Surrendering at a table where it is not written. If the info screen does not list surrender, the button may not exist. Plan the hand as a hit or stand instead.

Checklist before you sit

  1. Does the info screen list surrender at all, and is it late or early?
  2. Does the dealer stand or hit on soft 17? The ace column depends on it.
  3. How many decks? At four or six, check the 15 against 10 composition.
  4. Is the blackjack payout 3:2? Surrender does not rescue a 6:5 table.
  5. Playing Spanish 21? Late surrender and a surrender after doubling are standard there; see our Spanish 21 guide.

Questions and answers

What does surrender mean in blackjack?

You give up your hand after the first two cards and get half your stake back. The other half is lost. The decision comes on your first two cards, before you hit, double or split.

What is the difference between late and early surrender?

Late surrender is offered after the dealer checks for blackjack, so it does not help against a dealer natural. Early surrender comes before the check, which makes it worth several times more and very rare.

Which hands should you surrender in blackjack?

At a shoe game where the dealer stands on soft 17: hard 16 against 9, 10 or ace, and hard 15 against 10. If the dealer hits soft 17, add 15 and 17 against an ace, and 8,8 against an ace.

How much is surrender worth?

Late surrender lowers the house edge by about 0.08 points at an eight-deck table where the dealer stands on soft 17. Early surrender against tens and aces is worth roughly 0.7 points.
