Blackjack Switch: two hands, one swap

Blackjack Switch deals you two hands and lets you swap their second cards before you play. The casino charges for that in two places: a natural pays only even money, and a dealer who lands on 22 pushes instead of busting. With correct play the house edge on the standard rule set is 0.58%, close to an ordinary shoe game.

Blackjack Switch gives you something no other blackjack table allows: two hands dealt side by side, and the right to swap their second cards before you play either of them. Turn 10-5 and 6-10 into 10-10 and 6-5, and two weak totals become a twenty and an eleven to double. The casino pays for that freedom with two rule changes, and both of them matter more than the swap looks at first sight.

The rules in short

  1. Two equal bets. Each seat has two betting boxes, and both stakes must be the same.
  2. The deal. Each hand gets two cards; the dealer takes an upcard. On the standard rule set the dealer checks for blackjack with an ace or ten showing.
  3. The switch. You may exchange the second card of hand one with the second card of hand two. Only those top cards move; the first cards stay where they are.
  4. Play. After the switch you play each hand normally: hit, stand, double on any two cards, split. Each hand is settled on its own.
  5. Even-money naturals. A blackjack pays 1:1, not 3:2.
  6. Dealer 22 pushes. If the dealer finishes on 22, every hand you still have in play is a push. The one exception is a natural you were dealt, which still wins.

A blackjack you make by switching is not a natural on the standard rule set. It counts as 21 and pushes against a dealer 22.

The game was invented by Geoff Hall and patented in 2009. The push-on-22 rule was added in 2003, before the patent was granted, to balance the price of the switch.

Blackjack Switch odds: what the two penalties cost

The switch is worth a lot to the player. Two rules take it back:

  • Dealer 22. In ordinary blackjack a dealer 22 is a bust and pays every standing hand. In Blackjack Switch it is a push. On six decks with the dealer hitting soft 17, the dealer ends on exactly 22 in about 7.4% of rounds, per Wizard of Odds (probability 0.073536). In roughly seven rounds out of every hundred, hands that would have been paid are handed back.
  • Even money on naturals. A natural turns up in about 4.75% of hands in a shoe game. Paying 1 instead of 1.5 bets on each costs about 0.5 × 4.75% ≈ 2.4% of every stake, before anything is given back.

The net result, according to Wizard of Odds, is a house edge of 0.58% with optimal switching and play on six decks with the dealer hitting soft 17. The rule changes move it like this:

Rule setChangeHouse edge
Six decks, dealer hits soft 17, switched blackjack counts as 21base0.58%
Eight decks instead of six+0.020.60%
Dealer stands on soft 17−0.300.28%
A dealt natural wins automatically−0.210.37%
Switched blackjack also wins automatically−0.400.18%

For comparison, our house edge page puts an ordinary six-to-eight-deck table where the dealer hits soft 17 at about 0.65%. Blackjack Switch on the base rules sits a little under that, not far below it. Arnold Snyder, writing for Las Vegas Advisor, worked out lower figures, about 0.10% for one online rule set with no hole card and about 0.25% for live US tables, using his own switching method. The difference comes from the rule sets, which is why the info screen matters more than any headline number.

What a session costs

Every round puts two bets on the table, so stake per round is double the box stake. Expected cost = rounds × 2 × stake per hand × house edge.

Rounds at $10 per handStaked0.58%0.60%0.28%0.18%
100$2,000$11.60$12.00$5.60$3.60
300$6,000$34.80$36.00$16.80$10.80
500$10,000$58.00$60.00$28.00$18.00

These are long-run averages. Two hands that often win or lose together make single sessions swing, so size the bankroll for the doubled stake, not for one box.

How to decide the switch

The swap is the part ordinary basic strategy does not cover. A few working rules, drawn from Snyder's method and the Wikipedia summary of it:

  • Judge the pair of hands, not the best single hand. Snyder sorts each two-card hand into winner, push, loser or chance, assuming a ten in the dealer's hole, and ranks the combinations from winner/winner down to loser/loser. Pick the switch that gives the stronger combination.
  • Read the dealer's upcard first. He groups upcards as strong (7 to ace), weak (3 to 6) and the deuce on its own, because a dealer showing a 2 is less likely to bust than one showing 3 to 6.
  • Sometimes break a natural. Holding A-10 and 10-8 against a dealer 7, 8 or 9, swapping to A-8 and 10-10 gives two strong hands instead of one blackjack paid at even money.
  • Against a weak upcard, keep or make a blackjack. Against 2 to 6, the natural is worth more than any rearrangement.

Strategy differences after the switch

Once the cards are set, the play is close to the standard chart, with more hitting and less doubling. The dealer-22 push makes a dealer's bust less valuable to you, so standing on a stiff earns less and risking a bust costs less. Snyder's chart for the online no-hole-card version includes:

HandRegular basic strategyBlackjack Switch
Hard 12 vs 2 to 4stand vs 4, hit vs 2 and 3hit vs 2, 3 and 4
Hard 13 and 14 vs 2standhit
Hard 10 and 11double vs most upcardsdouble vs 2 to 8 only
Hard 9double vs 3 to 6double vs 6 only
Soft 18 vs 9, 10, acehithit
Pair of 8salways splitsplit vs 2 to 9

Live tables that check for blackjack play a little differently; Snyder notes that there you split aces and eights every time.

Mistakes players make

  • Switching for the prettiest hand. A 20 and a 15 can be worse than two 18s, depending on the upcard.
  • Doubling as if a dealer bust paid. Against a 5 or 6 a dealer 22 is a push, so doubles earn less here than on a regular table.
  • Taking insurance. It is a separate bet with a high edge; our insurance and side bets page has the arithmetic.
  • Assuming the rules. Soft 17, deck count and how a switched blackjack is paid change the edge by up to 0.40 points each. Look for those lines in the info screen.
  • Playing Super Match on every round. On a six-deck table it pays 1:1 for a pair, 5:1 for three of a kind, 8:1 for two pairs and 40:1 for four of a kind, with a house edge of about 2.55%. A $5 Super Match bet over 100 rounds is $500 staked and costs about $12.75 on average, more than the two main hands at $10 each.

Where to play Blackjack Switch with crypto

Blackjack Switch is a niche title, and lobbies change. We have not confirmed the game in the lobby of each casino below, so search the casino's table games for "Switch" before you deposit and open the game rules first. If the rule set is worse than the base above, an ordinary 3:2 table is the better seat; see the 3:2 vs 6:5 comparison.

Questions and answers

What is Blackjack Switch?

A blackjack variant where you play two hands with equal bets and may swap the second card of one hand with the second card of the other before playing them. In return, naturals pay 1:1 and a dealer total of 22 pushes.

What happens when the dealer gets 22 in Blackjack Switch?

The dealer does not bust. Every player hand still standing pushes, except an unswitched natural blackjack, which wins.

Does a blackjack made by switching count as a natural?

Not on the standard rule set: it counts as an ordinary 21, so a dealer 22 pushes it. Some tables pay it as a blackjack, which lowers the house edge by about 0.40 points.

Is Blackjack Switch better than regular blackjack?

On the standard rule set its edge, 0.58%, is close to a six-deck game where the dealer hits soft 17. It is not cheaper by default; the rule set decides, so read the info screen.

Is the Super Match side bet worth it?

It pays on pairs and better among your four starting cards and carries a house edge of about 2.55% on a six-deck pay table, several times the main game.
